Whose stress is this?
You hang up after a call with your mom and feel like you ran a marathon. She wasn’t angry. She wasn’t even talking about you. She was worried, about the neighbor’s fence and the doctor’s appointment and something she saw on the news. And now it’s in your chest.
At the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, Veronika Engert’s team had people watch a stranger go through a brutal mock job interview and a mental arithmetic test, through a one-way mirror. About a quarter of the watchers had a measurable stress-hormone spike of their own, from watching alone. When the person under pressure was their partner, it was closer to four in ten.
You didn’t imagine absorbing her anxiety. Your body measured it. The people you love most are the ones whose stress you’re most likely to catch.
Calm Your Nervous System is for a body that has been carrying other people’s weather for years, and is ready to put some of it down.
